So often, we hear about "myofascial release",  "muscle energy techniques", or "strain counter-strain techniques".  What exactly do these terms mean?  We aim to take out some of the confusion which surrounds these terms, and give the student a hands on experience with each of them.  We will discuss and demonstrate how to successfully complete these manual therapies.   We will talk about the value of these techniques and the best way to implement them into every day practice.

Differential Diagnosis for the Musculoskeletal System

We often hear, "there is more than one way to solve a problem." For this class, we want to help you discover how to do just that.  To look at old problems in new ways.  We will introduce to you the "Inclusion Method", which is our system for evaluation.  This system offers a fresh alternative to the traditional evaluation process.  We will talk about "key lesions" - what they are and how to find them.  We will teach you short cuts that will help you quickly narrow down your focus, so that you do not get lost trying to evaluate your patient.  Throughout the lecture and lab, we will be asking you to share your experiences, your input, your thoughts and to think outside of the box.

9.6 hours will be awarded to physical therapists, physical therapy assistants and massage therapists for completing this seminar, which satisfies the requirements of the NYS Board of Education.

We will offer a 1 hour lunch break.  There are many lunch options off site, so you are welcome to order out or bring what you like.  Please be aware that we will not have  a refrigeration option available.

Manual Therapy for the Cervical Spine, Thoracic Spine & Ribs

Reoccurring neck and upper back pain and dysfunction can be extremely frustrating to both the practitioner and the patient.  The thoracic cage can be particularly difficult to work with, as often the dysfunctions of this area are commonly misunderstood. They are even frequently ignored, leading to unneeded suffering by the patient and unwanted lack of success by the therapist.   In this class, we will focus on the interrelationships within the body, which have common effects on cervical and thoracic spines and ribs.  We will talk about how dysfunction in these areas can have detrimental effects on gait cycle, lumbar mechanics, and respiratory mechanics.  The structure and function of the spine and ribs will also be reviewed.  Treatment options will be demonstrated and practiced.

Preparatory Suggestions:  Review the anatomy of the cervical spine, thoracic spine and ribs.
